International Student

Immigration Guidelines

International students are responsible for maintaining their F-1 status at all times while in the United States. It is important to be aware of the regulations to make sure you are following the regulations to maintain your status.

Entering the U.S.

F-1 students can enter as early as 30 days prior to their program start date. Students must enter the U.S. with their I-20 and passport in order to have the correct class of admission (COA) as a F-1 student and not a tourist. Be certain that your I-901 fee has been paid prior to arrival and have the receipt printed out with you. We also highly recommend that you bring a copy of your proof of finances with you. Students must communicate their arrival information with their advisor. F-1 students are required to report to Albertus by the program start date listed on their I-20 or maybe in jeopardy of termination.

Maintaining your F-1 Status

Be enrolled in a full-time course of study every semester (unless permission is granted). Provide the DSO with an updated US address within 21 days of moving. Contact your DSO if you change or declare your major. Do not work in the U.S. unless authorized by your DSO (see more information below).

Vacation or Temporary Absence

All F-1 students who are leaving the country must first notify their International Student Advisor or DSO. Your I-20 must be signed before traveling as the travel signature is required to re-enter the United States.

Working and Internships

There are various opportunities for international students to gain work experience. F-1 students are allowed to work on-campus part-time if they are maintaining status. They must notify their international advisor prior to starting work. Students are also eligible for CPT or a paid/unpaid internship after their Sophomore year. They must meet the additional requirements and meet with their advisor before starting work. International students may also be eligible for OPT (optional practical training). Students must first meet with their advisor to apply for OPT.

Completing your Studies

When you complete your studies at Albertus Magnus you must be in touch with your advisor to ensure you are abiding by the regulations. F-1 students are allowed to stay in the country for 60 days after their program completion date as long as they have maintained status. Students are also allowed to transfer to another school but must contact their DSO to coordinate the transfer.
