About New Haven
Welcome to the Elm City
Settled in 1638 and a bastion of learning since the early 1700s, New Haven lights the way into the 21st century with an economy based on education, health care, biotechnology, architecture, engineering, marketing, retail, and legal and financial services.

One of the oldest planned cities in North America, New Haven was built around a 16-acre square. Known as the New Haven Green, and now a National Historic Landmark in the center of downtown, the Green sits at the heart of current revitalization programs that sparked a boom in new and eclectic restaurants, brewpubs and dance clubs, as well as trendy shopping sites and outstanding bookstores.
Innovation, Education, Culture & Arts
New Haven is burgeoning with education and innovation. There are five colleges and universities in the area, and New Haven has been recognized for being a tech entrepreneurial ecosystem hotspot in a recent Verizon study.
Yale University, one of the city’s best-known institutions, along with Yale-New Haven Hospital, are the city’s largest employers. Walking tours focus on the Gothic architecture of many Yale campus buildings, as well as its numerous world-class museums and art galleries.
A theatrical center, New Haven boasts the Long Wharf Theatre, Shubert Theater and the Yale School of Drama’s Repertory Theatre that serve as opening stages for Broadway productions, original productions and tours. Enjoy opera, cabaret, symphony, ballet and more in a variety of venues.
Exploring New Haven Food and Music
New Haven has a rich cultural heritage, from museums, concerts, theaters, and arts festivals throughout the year. World-famed New Haven-style pizza, called apizza (pronounced ah-BEETS) and Louie's Lunch (birthplace of the hamburger) are part of a top-notch food scene ---food trucks, formal dining and everything in between.
Historic Neighborhoods
New Haven’s many National Historic Districts preserve neighborhoods of 19th- and 20th-century American architecture. Albertus Magnus College owns several historic mansions in the beautiful suburban Prospect Hill neighborhood and uses them for residential and administrative facilities.
Accessible Location to NY and Boston
Connected to New York City by the Metro North commuter railroad and Amtrak, New Haven is also accessible by Interstate highways and the Tweed-New Haven Airport. The deep-water cargo Port of New Haven handles ocean-going vessels and barges.
City and Nature
East Rock. West Rock. Sleeping Giant. The four-season Connecticut climate offers outdoor activities all year round, whether at the shore or throughout the area’s extensive parks. The Greater New Haven region offers everything from colonial history to contemporary culture, including historic 19th-century working farms, orchards and farmers’ markets, nature preserves, sandy beaches and rocky hiking spots, as well as the best in city life.
Albertus Magnus College is proud to call New Haven home. Visit our campus and experience the many dimensions of our dynamic community for yourself.
