Albertus Magnus College Officially Launches Nursing Program

Connecticut Board of Examiners Approves New Bachelor of Science in Nursing; First Class to Enroll in Fall 2024

Nursing Program Begins

New Haven, Conn., September 20, 2023 – In furthering its mission to deliver an education that responds “to the academic needs and ethical challenges of its students and society,” Albertus Magnus College has received state approval to launch a new Bachelor of Science in Nursing program.  Earlier today, the Connecticut Board of Examiners for Nursing (CT BOEN) approved the undergraduate program, giving the green light for the College to admit nursing majors beginning in the fall for the 2024-2025 academic year.  A cohort of 26 will start classes in the fall and another class of 26 will be admitted in January 2025.

“For nearly 100 years, Albertus Magnus College has brought forward academic programs that dually meet the needs of its students and society, and this new Bachelor of Science in Nursing program will positively address the urgent demand within our state and region for more qualified nurses,” said Albertus President, Dr. Marc M. Camille.  “As New England’s most diverse Catholic college, Albertus will develop a new pool of competent, compassionate nurses who better mirror the diversity of the communities in which they will serve.”

Cynthia Jeffrey, Ed.D., MSN, RN, is the program’s Inaugural Director and started at the College on July 1.  With more than 20-years of experience as a nurse and over a decade of teaching and administrative experience in higher education, Dr. Jeffrey believes Albertus’ program offers several differentiating factors:

  • Small class size that optimizes individualized attention;
  • State of the art equipment that provides real-world clinical experience in a safe learning environment;
  • Interdisciplinary study and development of critical thinking skills that will make graduates workforce ready; and
  • Supportive, mentoring faculty dedicated to help students succeed.

“This new Nursing Program is completely in line with Albertus’ Dominican mission and traditions,” said Dr. Jeffrey.  “The nursing profession is the perfect example of the Four Dominican Pillars:  Study, Prayer, Community, and Service.  Nurses must always study and be life-long learners so that they can adapt to the latest medical advances; prayer is a part of self-reflection and assessment; as nurturers, nurses play an important role in bringing people together as a community; and of course, service – forever giving of themselves to others.”

In addition to a values and liberal arts-based education, nursing students at Albertus will benefit from clinical experience and research opportunities through relationships with numerous partners including:  The Connecticut Hospice, Gaylord Specialty Healthcare, Griffin Health, the Mary Wade Home, Sage Healthcare, and the Yale New Haven Health System.

Today’s CT BOEN approval is the latest in a string of exciting news regarding the Albertus Nursing Program.  Earlier this year, in support of its planning process, Albertus was awarded $805,000 over three years from the Connecticut Health Horizons Program, which was developed by the State last year to increase opportunities for aspiring nurses and social workers.  Albertus is utilizing these funds in support of launching the new nursing program, including funding for nursing faculty and their continuing education.  Learn more about Albertus’ Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
