Department of Public Safety

The mission of the Albertus Magnus College Department of Public Safety is to provide a safe and secure environment by protecting the well-being of all community members. For this purpose, the Department of Public Safety is service oriented to meet the specialized needs of the campus community. Duties include, but are not limited to: detecting potential crimes of opportunity; maintaining a pro-active approach to deterring crime by emphasizing highly visible patrols; identification and elimination of all hazardous conditions; public interaction and community awareness of security related issues; and the enforcement of traffic and parking rules and regulations. The Department of Public Safety is supportive of the College's mission statement in that it... "remains dedicated to providing an opportunity for learning which responds to the academic needs and ethical challenges of its students and society."

About Our Department of Public Safety Staff

Public Safety staff are non-sworn and do not have full arrest authority. They do have full authority from the College Board of Trustees to patrol and enforce campus policies and procedures. Public Safety staff have the rights and privileges afforded to any private property owner under Connecticut laws.

It is important, however, that all members of the Albertus community students, faculty and staff contribute to making Albertus Magnus College campus comfortable and secure.

LiveSafe

Albertus Magnus College monitors LiveSafe, a free security app available to all campus community members. LiveSafe allows our community the ability to connect with Public Safety through the app – report suspicious activity with photos/videos, request a virtual escort, find directions on campus, and report emergencies.

We encourage all College community members to download and set up the LiveSafe app available in your app store.

The College has a strong partnership with the City of New Haven Police Department (NHPD). Often, the College has a NHPD Officer on campus to work alongside of Public Safety. The Police Officer is here to serve as both a crime deterrent and as a community partner.

The Albertus Magnus College Emergency Alert System

The Albertus Magnus College Emergency Alert System is a mass notification system. It enables Albertus students, faculty, and staff to receive alerts and updates through a combination of e-mail, text messaging and phone calls in an emergency situation. This will help to keep our campus community informed of what is happening and any action that they might need to take.

Students, Faculty and Staff are automatically enrolled in the Emergency Alert System. We encourage everyone to maintain their current cellular phone number with the College.

  • The Emergency Alert System MAY be used for:
  • Major disaster
  • Safety alerts in those situations where there is an immediate potential for personal injury
  • Health concerns
  • Class cancellation due to weather/snow days

Albertus Magnus College will test the Emergency Alert System each semester. If you do not receive notification during a test, please contact Public Safety.

Falcon Card

Students are required to carry their Falcon Card at all times. Your Falcon Card will allow you access to your residence hall, allow you to eat in the dining facility and verify your student status when attending campus events. Students are required to produce their Falcon Card to any College official who requests it, including Public Safety, Residence Life, and Student Activities.

Fire Safety

All buildings on campus contain fire alarm systems which are monitored by an alarm company. The fire alarm systems are inspected annually and maintained throughout the year by the College. When an alarm is activated, the local Fire Department and Public Safety are notified.  In the event an alarm activates in your building, you may notify Public Safety to ensure they are responding.

All Residence Halls and some academic buildings are equipped with a sprinkler system. The sprinkler system is designed to activate in the event of a fire or high heat. No action is needed by anyone to activate the sprinkler system.

Partnership with City of New Haven Police Department

The College has a strong partnership with the City of New Haven Police Department (NHPD). Often, the College has a NHPD Officer on campus to work alongside of Public Safety. The Police Officer is here to serve as both a crime deterrent and as a community partner.

The Jeanne Clery Disclosure Annual Security and Fire Safety Report

The Jeanne Clery Disclosure Annual Security and Fire Safety Report is completed each year by Albertus Magnus College in compliance with federal and state regulations (Clery Act and Higher Education Act). These required policies and criminal statistics are collected and compiled by the Department of Public Safety and Division of Student Affairs into the annual Security Report and published by Albertus Magnus College. Albertus Magnus College is required by law to make policy, criminal statistics and information available to the College community and prospective students and employees. The Annual Security Report is available on the Albertus Magnus College website. Printed copies of this report are available upon request from the Department of Public Safety.
