Albertus Magnus College is pleased to announce the purchase of the Overseas Ministries Studies Center (OMSC) complex, consisting of three buildings located at 490 Prospect Street in New Haven, Connecticut, which will be used for additional student housing, offices, and meeting space. The purchase coincides with the upcoming arrival of the largest incoming class in the College’s 94-year history. To date, 275 first-year and transfer students are committed to enroll at the College, whose Catholic identity and Dominican heritage are at the core of the values- and liberal arts-based education that prepares graduates for a lifetime of career success and civic engagement.
490 Prospect Street has been the home to OMSC since 1987. Its mission is to be an incubator for missional imagination and practice, which aligns with many of the values espoused at Albertus Magnus College. Of historical significance, this property was briefly owned by the College in the 1940s.
“You might say with the repurchasing of the 490 Prospect Street property, we have come full circle,” said Dr. Marc M. Camille, the College’s 14th president. “The Albertus Magnus family looks forward to welcoming our newest Fearless Falcons later this week. Our faculty and staff stand ready to help them soar to their fullest potential. We are committed to inspiring Albertus students to integrate meaningfully and deeply into the New Haven community, and 490 Prospect Street will offer new engagement opportunities for our students.”
Sixty-one percent of the Class of 2023 has requested Albertus housing, among them 136 student- athletes who will be involved in the College’s 15 NCAA Division III varsity sports, including new varsity swimming and diving and ice hockey teams that will compete this year. Of the incoming class, 75-percent are from Connecticut, about 10-percent are international students, and numerous students hail from New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island.
The College’s enrollment has been on a significant growth trend since the arrival of Dr. Camille in June 2017. In addition to the 490 Prospect Street purchase, enrollment growth is being supported by the comprehensive $12.5 million Campus Center renovation that is scheduled to be complete for the spring 2020 semester, the addition of several new academic programs and athletics teams, and an increase in the number of full-time faculty.
Move-in day for the Class of 2023 is Friday, August 23. Classes for the fall semester begin Monday, August 26 with a college-wide convocation and candlelight ceremony, the College’s oldest tradition.
