Owen Griswold, a sophomore at Albertus Magnus College, is proud to be the first in his family to attend college. Inspired by his mother’s dedication to providing a better life despite not finishing high school, Owen embraced hard work and determination throughout high school and beyond. Drawn to Albertus for its authentic and caring community, he found a deep sense of belonging and rediscovered the importance of his faith, symbolized by a meaningful necklace. Once reserved in high school, Owen has grown into a more confident and involved individual, embracing challenges and opportunities to shape his future.

Josh Cooper is proud to be the first in his family to attend college, breaking new ground with determination and resilience. Growing up, his parents paused their education to care for his brother, who was born with Down Syndrome, inspiring Josh to overcome his own challenges in special education. Motivated to prove his potential, he worked hard to transition out of special education and pursue higher education. At Albertus Magnus College, Josh found a supportive and close-knit community that helped him realize he didn’t need the extensive support he once relied on—just people who genuinely cared and encouraged him to excel.

Gladys Washington, a determined first-generation college student, always dreamed of pursuing higher education, even when it once felt out of reach. Over time, she realized it was her moment to prioritize her goals and make her dreams a reality. After visiting Albertus Magnus College, she fell in love with the campus and its supportive atmosphere. Taya Bagley '27

Taya Bagley, a dedicated first-generation college student, is motivated by a deep desire to honor and inspire her parents. With her mother becoming a parent at 18 and her father lacking a strong support system, college wasn’t an option for them, but their encouragement fueled Taa’s determination. Grateful for the opportunity to pursue her dreams without feeling overwhelmed, Taya’s success is rooted in her parents’ sacrifices and unwavering support. Their influence remains the driving force in her journey to achieve her goals and celebrate their legacy.

Born in Puerto Rico and raised in Arizona, Pedro initially came to Albertus Magnus College for sports but quickly immersed himself in campus life and opportunities for professional growth. Grateful for the supportive community, he views Albertus as the perfect place to launch his career. Pedro strives to set a new standard of achievement, inspiring the next generation to aim even higher.

Stephanie Santiago, a senior at Albertus Magnus College, is proud to be the first in her family to pursue higher education. Growing up in New Haven with a single mother and five siblings, Stephanie was inspired by her mother’s sacrifices to create a better future for their family. With the support of professors and staff at Albertus, she discovered her passion for numbers and is now on the CPA track, aiming to become a licensed CPA and promote financial literacy within her community. Winning a prestigious national CPA Society scholarship, awarded to only eight students nationwide, has brought her closer to her dreams and deepened her gratitude for the opportunities and encouragement she’s found at Albertus.

Andrew Foster, a first-generation college graduate and immigrant, understands the challenges and triumphs of being the first to fly. Born in Jamaica and immigrating to the U.S. with his family, he navigated the uncertainties of college without guidance, learning firsthand the importance of support for first-generation students. Now at Albertus Magnus College, he is committed to helping students from admission to graduation, ensuring they have the resources and encouragement they need to succeed. Watching students grow in confidence and ultimately walk across the stage to receive their degrees is a source of immense pride and fulfillment for him.

Spencer McBreairty, Associate Director of Residential Life and Community Standards, is proud to be the first in his family to attend college. Growing up in a small town, Spencer dreamed of exploring the world and gaining new experiences, a vision his parents wholeheartedly supported despite not having attended college themselves. After earning both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Southern Maine, Spencer dedicated his career to creating a positive, inclusive, and supportive campus environment. As a first-generation college graduate, he finds it deeply rewarding to work with students who share this background, helping them overcome challenges and thrive in their college journey.
